For over 87 years Sokol Spirit has been offering Czech language classes in the same classroom. Pavlina Reichlova (Sokol Spirit member) from the Czech Republic with a degree in Language Pathology (NIU) continues to be the head teacher. Substitute teachers include Sisters Vera Wilt (Sokol Spirit), a lawyer and Czech language interpreter/translator; Dagmar Bradec, and Lenka Mezera, our former head instructor who has a Masaryk University degree in teaching English as a Second Language. Ms. Mezera. is our textbook liaison in the Czech Republic and Sister Meribeth Tooke, Spirit Educational Director chairs the Spirit Czech language team. CZECH LANGUAGE CONVERSATION CLASSES:       

*MONDAYS, 9-10:30am, BASIC CZECH CONVERSATION & GRAMMAR: 12 weeks $190 per Session/Minimum 3 full-time students OR 6 part-time paying $95 for 6 classes. Session I: September 11-November 27, 2017; Session II: January 8, 2018 – March 26; Session III: April 9, 2018 – June 25 (Session III is 10 weeks @$160 OR 6 part-time paying $80 for 5 classes); Textbook: Basic Czech I by Ana Adamovicova and Darina Ivanovova (Amazon $18) with handouts

**WEDNESDAYS, 9-10:30am and another class @7:00–8:30pm, INTERMEDIATE CZECH CONVERSATION & GRAMMAR: 12 Weeks $190 per Session/Minimum 3 full-time students OR 6 part-time paying $95 for 6 classes. October 6 The Seven Ravens/ Sedmero krkavců 2015, 103 minutes, G-Fantasy, adventure. Božena Němcová Czech/Slovak fairy tale about a daughter born into the grief-stricken family of a baker, whose wife, years ago, in a fit of rage, curses their seven sons into ravens.

November 3  You Kiss Like the Devil/ Líbáš jako ďábel, 2012, 108 minutes, PG-Farce  A “romp” between switching “mates”, divorce, life and six couples in their 40’s and how life “happens”. Filmed in Morocco, Slovakia, and Czech Republic. Sequel to You Kiss Like God.

December 1 Three Brothers/ Tři Bratři, 2014, 90 minutes, G-Young men as by a miracle enter into famous fairy tales (Little Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Twelve Months) and face traps, comedic mash-ups, unexpected moments and even love in a story full of humor and songs

February 2 Chasing Fifty/ Padesátka, 2015, 97 minutes, GP13 Set in the beautiful snowy Krkonoše Mountians, the film centers around the Three Kings 50 km Cross-Country Ski Race. The story holds the secret of one mountain family.

March 2 Protector/ Protektor, 2011, Black/White (Film Noir), 102 minutes, R-frontal nudity A fateful love story is set in Prague during the late 1930s and subsequent Nazi occupation. It focuses on radio journalist Emil, who is deeply in love with his glamorous Jewish movie star wife Hana. When the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia is established, Hana's career is cut short and Emil's radio station put under German control.

April 6 Empties/ Vratné lahve, 2007, 100 minutes, PG-Comedy/Drama A comic love story about a man who refuses to accept that old age is empty of love, meaning and value to society.  Last of the trilogy of The Elementary Teacher and Kolya.  Award winners!

May 4 If a Thousand Clarinets/ Kdyby tisíc klarinetů, 1965, Black/White, 136 minutes, PG-Comedy/Fantasy Military base.  An awkward soldier.  A statue of Bach.  And suddenly all guns in the area change into music instruments.  Great mystery is immediately found by TV station.  And soon the military base becomes a stage for huge TV show.

June 1 The Joke/ Žert, 1968, Black/White, 81 minutes, PG In the 1950's, Ludvik Jahn was expelled from the Communist Party and the University by his fellow students, because of a politically incorrect note he sent to his girlfriend. Fifteen years later, he tries to get his revenge by seducing Helena, the wife of one of his accusers.  Based on the book by Milan Kundera who also wrote The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

 

WATCH FOR SPECIAL FILM FESTIVAL OF MILOS FORMAN IN 2018:  Loves of a Blonde; The Firemen’s Ball; Valmont; Ragtime; Goya’s Ghosts; Amadeus; The Beloved are under consideration… some in Czech with English subtitles, some American made, but filmed in Czecho and some where he is director, and/or writer and/or actor!!!  A CELEBRATION.  Let us know your favorite @ czechclass@sokolspirit.org

MONDAY BEGINNER CZECH LANGUAGE CLASS

Class schedule: This course is 8 weeks long. The course will start on Monday, September 12th, 2016, and it will end on Monday, October 31st, 2016.

Time: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm

Location: Sokol Spirit Hall, 3909 South Prairie Avenue, Brookfield, IL 60513.  Classroom is on the second floor. The classroom will open at 6:45 p.m. Other activities occur in the building on Mondays so the building is open, but there is a doorbell south (right) of the front doors in the rare case you find them locked. Please try to come into class ON TIME!

Refreshments are voluntary, provided by class members on a rotating basis. Coffee is available to be made.

Textbook & Materials: Textbook CZECH BASIC I , by A. Adamovicova and D. Ivanovova; published by KAROLINUM, 2009. ISBN 978-80-246-7-13-8

Other materials will be provided by the instructor.

Student Expectations:

*If absent, the student should contact the teacher for copies of missed handouts or homework, and the Syllabus is posted to the Sokol Spirit website: sokolspirit.org

*Students should come prepared to the classes, and bring a notebook for their notes as well as the handouts from previous classes. The handouts are key material for the grammar and vocabulary.

*Class participation is the student’s responsibility, and his or her interest and effort is key to learning the Czech language.

Teacher Expectation:

The teacher will be introducing fundamental grammar, pronunciation and communication skills. The learned material will be applied to hands-on projects and homework assignments. There will be many opportunities for students to communicate in the Czech language as well as gather useful information about Czech culture. Czech culture class is held the 4rd Tuesday of the month and Czech films with subtitles are held the 1st Friday in the classroom starting at 7pm.  Donation $5 with free Pilsner, water bottle, or soda!

Session structure:

Total time: 90 minutes

5 min: questions; 15 min: review of previous material; 30 min: new material; 20 min: in-class assignments, hands-on projects; 20 min: student projects, conversation.

Student Objectives:  Students will be able to:

*Understand basic grammatical rules, such as gender
