Czech Foreign Language Classes for 2016-2017

For over 87 years Sokol Spirit has been offering Czech language classes in the same classroom. Pavlina Reichlova (Sokol Town of Lake) from the Czech Republic with a degree in Language Pathology (NIU) continues to be the head teacher. Substitute teachers include Sisters Vera Wilt (Sokol Spirit), a lawyer and Czech language interpreter/translator; and Lenka Mezera, our former head instructor who has a Masaryk University degree in teaching English as a Second Language. Ms. Mezera. is our textbook liason in the Czech Republic and Sister Meribeth Tooke, Spirit Educational Director chairs the Spirit Czech language team. CZECH LANGUAGE/CONVERSATION 2016-17 CLASSES 

MONDAYS, 7:00–8:30pm, BASIC CZECH CONVERSATION & GRAMMAR: 8 weeks $155 per Session/Minimum 3 students. Session I: September 12, 2016 – October 31; Session II: January 9, 2017 – February 27; Session III: April 3, 2017 – June 5; Textbook: Basic Czech I by Ana Adamovicova and Darina Ivanovova (Amazon $18)

WEDNESDAYS, 7:00–8:30pm, INTERMEDIATE CZECH CONVERSATION & GRAMMAR: 12 Weeks $140 per Session/Minimum 5 students. Session 1: September 14, 2016 – December 7; Session II: January 4. 2017 – March 22; Session III: April 5, 2017  – June 21. Textbook: Basic Czech

THEME:  Czech Music Stories

3rd TUESDAYS of the Month 7:00-8:30pm September through June $5 per person includes 1st pilsner, water bottle, or pop free NOTE: Extra fees apply when there is a hands-on activity…please preregister so supplies can be ordered and you are not disappointed. September 20 Story of Hussities (Husitska) and their Inspiration for Antonin Dvorak; October 18 The folk music of the Czech Republic and its inspiration for Smetana’s Work – Slovanske Tance; November 15 Story of Czech Christmas Carols-Koledy and workshop of Decorative Christmas pastry; January 17 The Story of Czech National Anthem and Frantisek Skroup; February 21 Czech Legends and their connection to Czech music – Smetana’s Libuse; March 21 Leos Janacek and Otevirani studanek and making of an Easter straw cross; May 16 A set of six symphonic poems composed between 1874 and 1879 by the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana, Ma Vlast; June 20 The story of Jaroslav Jezek and  trio Werich-Jezek-Voskovec (Osvobozene Divadlo).
