Sokol Spirit
Sokol Spirit is an independent not-for-profit 501C3 unit fraternally affiliated with the American Sokol. The American Sokol has district organizations and the Central District office has resided in our building for many years utilizing Spirit’s building for various competitions. Sokol was founded on the philosophy that only physically fit, mentally alert, and culturally well developed citizens can make a nation strong and give life to the honorable spirit of patriotism.
Sokol Spirit supports physical and moral health, good citizenship and responsible patriotism, combined with continuous self-improvement, designed for a lifetime! We are one of 44 Sokol units, or clubs, open in North America. Spirit is located on the north/south Prairie Avenue, one block south of the Burlington Railroad tracks and station and the PACE bus #31 Prairie Railroad stop. The building is on the east side of the street, about 2 city blocks north of the intersection of Prairie and Ogden Avenues which is a stoplight. Feel free to e-mail us at info@sokolspirit.org or call 708-485-9663 to reach our resident manager or voicemail.
Join Our Community
Sokol Spirit's mission is to provide fitness and community for individuals and families through physical, educational, cultural and social programming.
- The physical program revolves around a nine-month progressively taught artistic gymnastic class for ages three to our oldest student at 93 running September through May each year. It incorporates field and track, marching, calisthenic drills, rhythmic gymnastics, volleyball and basketball. There are several Central District run competitions during the year to test skills against the United States of America Gymnastic Association (USAG) and rhythmic and artistic competitions as well. All instructors are USAG Safety Certified and CPR trained thru the Brookfield Fire Department Red Cross program. Fitness and Strength tracking is new to the classes.
- Educational clinics, CPR and Czech-language classes (operating since the 1920's) are open to members and the communities surrounding our building.
- Social activities include a traditional November Spaghetti Dinner, Memorial Day trip to the Bohemian National Cemetery, Chicago where we have been presenting the colors and have been part of the ceremony for years. There have been Open Gym and game nights. There will be film, and hobby/craft nights in the near future. Golf and Bowling outings are planned. Rummage sales held in October and April bring everyone together because one man's trash is another's treasure. We have hosted dances, receptions, dramas, and recitals in our building, including an international break-dancing meeting!
