What is Sokol?

Sokol is an organization that was founded by Dr. Miroslav Tyrs on the credo: “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body”. The original organization was formed in 1862 in the Czech lands (now Czech Republic and Slovak Republic). “Sokol” is the Czech word for falcon: a symbol of strength, beauty, harmony and freedom.

With waves of immigrants since the 1800s, the first United States Sokol unit was founded in St. Louis, Missouri in 1865 (the ending of the Civil War). Soon it had many units including in Chicago, offering physical training in gymnastics and other athletics, as well as providing cultural awareness and family oriented activities. There are thriving, vital affiliates of the American Sokol organization around the United States.

Sokol is a great group of people bonded by common interests, goals, and sometimes heritage and ethnicity. If you are looking for a place for children to learn personal discipline, physical fitness and gymnastic skills, song and dance, Sokol is ready and waiting for them.

Sokol units offer gym classes using strength building and U.S.A.G. skill level training and social activities for teenagers, too! Still feeling competitive in your 20's, 40's or 60's? Sokol has a place for you, too! Instead of going over the hill, you can be going over the vault.

What is Sokol Spirit?

Sokol Spirit is the group for you, located in Brookfield, IL. It supports physical and moral health, good citizenship and responsible patriotism, combined with continuous self-improvement, designed for a lifetime!  We are one of 44 Sokol units, or clubs, open in North America.

One of our Womens' Volleyball Teams

Spirit is located on the north/south Prairie Avenue, one block south of the Burlington Railroad Brookfield Metra station and the PACE bus #31 Prairie Railroad stop.  The building is on the east side of the street, about 2 blocks north of the stoplight at Prairie and Ogden Avenues.

We have programs for all ages and skill levels.  Sokol provides a welcoming environment that is great for family AND individuals, especially those who are looking for more than simply a fitness class.  Our members can choose their own level of involvement including leadership roles within the organization, simply attending social functions or anywhere in between.

Sokol Spirit is an independent not-for-profit 501C3 unit, fraternally affiliated with the American Sokol. We are still driven by the philosophy that only physically fit, mentally alert, and culturally well-developed citizens can make a nation strong and give life to the honorable spirit of patriotism.

Join Our Community

Sokol Spirit's mission is to provide fitness and community for individuals and families through physical, educational, cultural and social programming.

  • The physical program revolves around a nine-month progressively taught artistic gymnastic class for ages three to our oldest student at 93 running September through May each year. It incorporates field and track, marching, calisthenic drills, rhythmic gymnastics, volleyball and basketball. There are several Central District run competitions during the year to test skills against the United States of America Gymnastic Association (USAG) and rhythmic and artistic competitions as well. All instructors are USAG Safety Certified and CPR trained thru the Brookfield Fire Department Red Cross program. Fitness and Strength tracking is new to the classes.
  • Educational clinics, CPR and Czech-language classes (operating since the 1920's) are open to members and the communities surrounding our building.
  • Social activities include a traditional November Spaghetti Dinner, Memorial Day trip to the Bohemian National Cemetery, Chicago where we have been presenting the colors and have been part of the ceremony for years. There have been Open Gym and game nights. There will be film, and hobby/craft nights in the near future. Golf and Bowling outings are planned. Rummage sales held in October and April bring everyone together because one man's trash is another's treasure. We have hosted dances, receptions, dramas, and recitals in our building, including an international break-dancing meeting!
